The nights are drawing in and there is a cooler feel in the air which can mean only one thing – autumn is here!
The summer of 2018 was the hottest on record since 1976, so we don’t blame you if you’ve put off jobs to do around your house in favour of enjoying the amazing weather. But, now that the summer is sadly over, its time to turn your attention to your home and get it prepared for the colder months ahead.
Here is a checklist of things to do inside and outside before winter comes knocking at your door!
OUTSIDE YOUR HOUSE
Fix the shed roof – Do this sooner rather than later to stop the contents in there being ruined by unpredictable winter weather.
Bring garden furniture inside – Some garden furniture doesn’t keep well if you leave it outside during the winter, so put it in your shed (hopefully you’ve fixed the roof!) or garage and store it there until the better weather comes.
Put away your garden hose – It’s a good idea to drain it first otherwise it might freeze when the temperature dips, and this can lead to the pipe cracking when it defrosts.
Cover your pond with a net – This will prevent leaves and other debris from falling on top of your pond and potentially polluting the water and harming your fish and pond life.
Tidy your garden and trim your lawn – Now is the time to shelter any shrubs or small trees to prevent the frost from getting to them. If you have borders or raised beds, give them a tidy up and mulch with compost or manure. Give your lawn the last cut of the season, using a high blade and apply an autumn fertiliser and moss-killer. We specialise in regular garden maintenance, so if you don’t have time to do this – leave it in our hands! Get in touch with us on 0345 226 1293.
Get your gutters cleaned – Keeping your gutters clean is important, as they are designed to direct water away from your home. However, if they are clogged up with leaves, dirt and other debris, this may prevent them from doing their job properly.
INSIDE YOUR HOME
Weatherproof your home – Caulk or add weather-strips to your doors and windows if you detect a draft coming in. If you have old windows or doors, you may need to have the seals replaced by a professional.
Organise your food cupboards – Dare we mention the C- word? Christmas is that time of year that we like to indulge in and it’s when our store cupboards are crammed to the rafters with delicious treats. And, as it’s only around the corner, now is as good a time to go through your food cupboards and get rid of any out-of-date food, to make way for your Christmas goodies. If you’re throwing away food in glass jars, plastic containers, and tins, remember to put them in your recycling box and not in your bin!
Wash your curtains and drapes – If you last cleaned your curtains after reading our May blog (https://www.homeis.co.uk/blog/2018/may/02/how-to-spring-clean-your-curtains-and-drapes/), then just think about how much dirt and dust they have caught in the last 6 months. Click on the link to read our handy guide on how to give them a thorough clean.
Clean your oven – A dirty oven not only stinks your kitchen out, but it can also ruin the taste of food cooked in it, especially meat. That is why it’s important to clean your oven. If you’d rather have a professional do it for you, give us a call on 0345 226 1293. https://www.homeis.co.uk/oven-cleaning
Vacuum your home top-to-bottom – During the summer months who wants to vacuum when you can be relaxing in the sunshine? But, just think how much dust has built up on skirting boards, and underneath furniture. Now is the time to get your vac out and blast away the cobwebs. Don’t forget to dust often forgotten about items in the home like light shades and bulbs, above your kitchen cupboards, blinds, TV’s and computers, fireplaces, light switches, etc.
